ScanDex API Terms of Use
These Terms govern access to and use of the ScanDex API and related lookup services.
1. Commercial use
ScanDex grants approved account holders a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use ScanDex lookup results within their own products and services, including commercial products.
For example, a customer may use a barcode lookup to populate a game title and platform field in a collector, inventory, catalog, museum, or similar application.
Customers may use their own images, photographs, artwork, and other content alongside ScanDex lookup results.
2. Attribution
No attribution is currently required for ordinary display of title and platform values returned by ScanDex.
Customers may optionally identify the service with wording such as:
Game information provided by ScanDex.
ScanDex may introduce reasonable attribution requirements for particular datasets or third-party content. Any new requirement will be communicated before it applies to future use.
3. Early-access pricing
ScanDex is currently free during the invite-only early-access period. Early-access customers may receive founder pricing or other preferential pricing when paid plans become available.
Early access does not guarantee that the service will remain free indefinitely.
Before introducing charges, ScanDex will provide reasonable advance notice to the account email address and identify the applicable plan, rates, limits, and billing terms. Customers may stop using the API before paid billing begins.
ScanDex may impose reasonable rate limits, quotas, or usage restrictions to protect service availability.
4. Third-party data and IGDB
ScanDex may use third-party data sources to improve or provide lookup results.
ScanDex authorizes customers to display the title and platform strings returned through the ScanDex API as part of their product experience. This permission does not grant rights to:
- access the IGDB API directly;
- use or store IGDB identifiers for separate enrichment;
- reproduce, resell, or redistribute an IGDB database;
- use IGDB images, artwork, descriptions, ratings, or other fields unless separately authorized;
- imply endorsement by IGDB, Twitch, or another third-party provider.
Where a result is derived from IGDB or another third-party source, the customer remains responsible for complying with that provider’s applicable commercial terms and attribution requirements. Customers seeking certainty about third-party rights should obtain written clearance from the relevant provider.
For a product using only title and platform strings returned by ScanDex, ScanDex’s permission does not by itself constitute a separate IGDB commercial partnership.
5. Prohibited use
Customers must not:
- use the API to create a competing general-purpose barcode or game metadata API;
- bulk-download, scrape, mirror, or dump ScanDex data;
- resell or sublicense raw lookup results as a standalone database;
- share API credentials;
- circumvent rate limits, authentication, quotas, or other technical controls;
- use the service for unlawful, fraudulent, abusive, or harmful activity;
- misrepresent ScanDex, Gamery, or any third-party data provider;
- use results to make safety-critical, financial, legal, medical, or other high-impact decisions.
Normal product use, including storing the title and platform associated with a customer’s own scanned collection item, is permitted unless separately restricted by a written agreement.
6. Account and security
Customers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of their credentials and for all activity under their account.
Customers must promptly notify ScanDex of suspected unauthorized access or credential compromise.
7. Service availability and data quality
Lookup results may be incomplete, delayed, inaccurate, or unavailable. ScanDex does not guarantee that every barcode will produce a match or that returned metadata is error-free.
ScanDex may modify, suspend, or discontinue any endpoint, dataset, or feature. We will make reasonable efforts to provide notice of material changes where practical.
8. Privacy
Customers must not send personal information to the API unless the relevant endpoint expressly permits it.
Customers are responsible for providing all legally required notices and obtaining any necessary permissions for data collected through their own product.
9. Intellectual property
ScanDex and its licensors retain all rights in the ScanDex service, software, documentation, databases, trademarks, and underlying technology.
These Terms grant only the limited rights expressly stated here. They do not transfer ownership of ScanDex or third-party data.
10. Suspension and termination
ScanDex may suspend or terminate access if a customer violates these Terms, presents a security or operational risk, abuses the service, or fails to pay applicable charges.
A customer may stop using the API at any time.
Upon termination, the customer must stop making API requests and stop using ScanDex branding. Previously created product records containing permitted title and platform fields may remain in the customer’s product unless ScanDex is required by law or a third-party rights holder to request removal.
11. Disclaimer
The service is provided on an “as available” and “as is” basis to the maximum extent permitted by law.
ScanDex disclaims warranties of uninterrupted availability, accuracy, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, except where such disclaimers are not permitted by applicable law.
12. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, ScanDex and Gamery will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or lost-profit damages arising from use of the service.
13. Changes
ScanDex may update these Terms as the service evolves. Material changes will be posted on this page or communicated to registered account holders.
Continued use after the effective date of updated Terms constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
